Fading is the damage nobody catches in progress. Then a rug moves, and there's a rectangle of the original colour and a paler version of it everywhere else. It happened over years, it can't be undone, and preventing it would have cost a small fraction of what the floor did.
Four causes, and UV is only the largest
Ultraviolet light takes the blame and accounts for roughly 40% of fade damage. Visible light contributes about another 25%, heat around 25%, and the remainder comes from humidity and the inherent stability of the dye or finish itself.
That breakdown is how to read film marketing honestly. "Blocks 99% of UV" is entirely true and substantially incomplete — practically every quality film does it, including completely clear security film. It removes the single biggest cause. Getting at the remaining 60% requires a film that also cuts visible light and infrared heat, which is a different product at a different price.
Why the valley accelerates it
Fade rate scales with total light energy delivered, and this valley delivers a lot. Long clear summers with minimal cloud cover, no marine layer damping the afternoon, and high sun angles from May through September add up to a meaningfully harsher exposure than the coastal Westside gets over the same year.
The heat component matters too, and it's the one people forget. Heat is a quarter of the damage in its own right, and a south or west room here runs hot for months. That's why an infrared-rejecting film often outperforms a clear UV-blocking one on fade protection even though both quote the same 99% UV figure.
What's most at risk
Not everything degrades at the same rate. Roughly in order of vulnerability:
- Works on paper, photographs, and textiles — watercolours and silk can shift visibly in one season of direct sun.
- Real timber flooring, with cherry, walnut, and oiled boards the first to change.
- Soft furnishings and window treatments, where reds and blues drop out earliest.
- Finishes on furniture, which go yellow and powdery long before the timber itself does.
- Leather, which dries and fades faster than most people expect in a hot sunlit room.
Wide-plank engineered hardwood, which is in an enormous number of homes built here since the nineties, is particularly worth protecting — the wear layer can only be refinished a limited number of times, so fade damage runs down a finite resource.
How much film actually helps
A good film stops 99% of ultraviolet and, depending on what you choose, a useful share of visible light and heat as well. Measured against bare glass that generally slows fading two to five times over — the floor that would have turned in four years instead holds for fifteen.
That isn't total protection and no film turns a living room into an archive. But the gap between a floor that goes in four years and one that holds for fifteen is the gap between replacing it once and replacing it three times.
Skylights are the worst single offender
Overhead glazing takes the sun at the most direct possible angle and concentrates it on whatever sits below. Given how many homes here have original builder skylights in the hallway and kitchen, this is a common and easily missed source of a hard-edged fade stripe tracking across the floor.
